Information for faculty & students about using copyrighted materials at Red Deer Polytechnic.

Citing & Attributing Works

Use legally obtained works.

All images, videos, and text resources used need to be legally obtained

  • Use versions of works posted/uploaded/presented by the creator or copyright holder. See examples of legally obtained works.
  • Look for identifiers (e.g., watermarks, copyright information) to help determine whether the work was meant to be uploaded on the site you found it.
  • Use a reverse image search to find the source/creator of an image (e.g., TinEye, Google Search by Image).

Use citations and attributions to credit works.

All images, videos, and text resources used need to be credited through citation or attribution:

  • Cite any works you use following the appropriate citation style rules for your discipline:
  • Attribute openly licensed works (e.g. public domain, Creative Commons) using the format indicated by the creator. If the creator has not specified a format, then create an attribution using either:
    • Open Attribution Builder 
      • Free tool to build attributions
    • TASL format, include these 4 basic elements:
      • Title
      • Author
      • Source (i.e. the URL)
      • License type (i.e. Creative Commons)

Guidelines

When including images, videos, and text resources:

  • Include an attribution or in-text citation within your course or presentation slides. 
  • Include complete references at the end of your course module. List citations in alphabetical order, following your discipline's recommended citation style.
  • Refer to the chart below for examples of citations/attributions and references.
  • View the Attribution and Citation in Blackboard Exemplar to see these examples in context within Blackboard.

Images such as photographs, clipart, charts, and diagrams must include a citation or attribution to the image source.

Guidelines:

  • Not included in References or Bibliography
  • Include attribution below image
  • Use the suggested attribution format provided by creator or image collection such as Pixabay, Pexels, and Unsplash.
  • If no format is suggested, include at minimum the following with a link to the image:
    Image Title. Image Creator. Image Collection.

Guidelines:

  • Include the full citation in References or Bibliography using APA, MLA, Chicago or other citation style
  • Include an attribution below the image in this suggested format:
    Image Title. Image Creator. Image Collection.
