Instructions

In groups of 3, please assign someone to each of the following roles:

  • Manager: ensures that assigned tasks are being completed on time and all members of the group are participating in the activities and understanding the concepts
  • Recorder: records the group's answers
  • Spokesperson: reports back to the class and asks questions on behalf of the group

Working together, please complete the first two tasks below. You have 10 minutes and then we'll regroup. Once we've touched base, please complete the last two tasks. I will give you another 10-15 minutes to complete the tasks. Please pay close attention to the time.

Task #1

In CINAHL, run a basic search for "dementia."

As a group, agree on your answers to the following questions. These questions should take 10 minutes.

  1. On the left, use the limiters for age and gender to limit to research on 80+ year old women. How did this affect your results?

  1. Look at your number of results! What is another relevant way you could narrow the results down, besides age and gender?

  1. Scanning your results, find one that has a link that says, "PDF Full Text" and click on it. What happens? Can you name one advantage to using the PDF version?

Task #2

In CINAHL, start a new search. Re-run a basic search for "dementia."

As a group, agree on your answers to the following questions. These questions should take 10 minutes.

In CINAHL, start a new search. Re-run a basic search for "dementia." From your list of results, select a journal article. Click on the article’s title.

  1. Is this article peer-reviewed? How do you know?

  1. If you wanted to cite this article, where would you find the information you need for the References list entry? Hint: Use the templates found on the APA guide for articles.

  1. On the right, find the tool called “permalink” and click on it. What happens? How is the Permalink different from the DOI?

  1. Click on CINAHL Subject Headings at the top of the page. Search ("browse") for dementia. Tick the box next to dementia. Subheadings appear to the right. Choose a few subheadings relevant to dementia and click Search Database. How does this affect your results?

PAUSE

Pause here and we'll quickly regroup as a class before moving on to the next two tasks.

As a group, agree on your answers to the following questions. These questions should take 10 minutes.

  1. Using the Advanced Search, set up a search using 3 concepts related to this issue at your care home. What 3 terms did you use? Describe your process and your results.

  1. What features in CINAHL were the most effective for your search?

  1. Your care home is located in the United States. Describe how you would change your search strategy to add this information.
