What is Mental Health?

Mental health is the ability of individuals to think, feel, and act in ways that enhance their ability to enjoy and cope with day-to-day life. Positive mental health means creating a balance among all aspects of an individual’s life including the social, physical, spiritual, economic, and mental.

The Dual Continuum Model of Mental Health and Mental Illness is widely recognized in organizations and institutions across Canada. It portrays that mental health and mental illness are not mutually exclusive, as an individual with a mental illness can experience positive mental health, while an individual without a mental illness can experience poor mental health (CMHA Onatario, 2017; Keyes, 2011; Public Health Agency of Canada, 2006).
