The official APA Style website has guidelines for citing content generated by AI: How to cite ChatGPT
In-Text
In APA Style, you must describe when and how you used ChatGPT. In your text, provide the prompt you used, as well as any relevant text generated in response.
For example:
When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

References
In APA Style, the four elements of the reference list entry are:
- Author. The company, "OpenAI," is considered the author (not "ChatGPT")
- Date. Provide the year of the version you used, not the exact date (as per Section 10.10)
- Title. The title is "ChatGPT." Include the version number you used after the title in parenthesis. Then, include bracketed text providing an additional description about the source; in this case, ChatGPT is a large language model.
- Source. Since the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name. Only include the URL directly to ChatGPT.
