Secondary Source

Sometimes an author writes about research that someone else has done, but you are unable to track down the original research report. In this case, because you did not read the original report, cite only the source you did consult. The words “as cited in” in the parenthetical reference indicate you have not read the original research.

General Format

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase)

(Author Surname, Year, as cited in Author Surname of the source you read, Year)

References

Author Surname, First Initial. Second Initial. (Year). Book title: Subtitle. Place of Publication: Publisher.

Tip: The above example shows the References list entry elements for a book. Make sure to create the appropriate References list entry for the source type you actually read (e.g. book, journal article, website, etc.)

Example

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase)

(Fong, 1987, as cited in Bertram, 1996)

References

Do not include Fong (1987) in your References; do include Bertram (1996).

Tips

  • See the APA Manual (8.6) for more information and examples.

Artificial Intelligence (i.e. ChatGPT)

Note: Content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) may not be considered as an acceptable source for your course work. Be sure to evaluate content carefully and check with your instructor.

The official APA Style website has guidelines for citing content generated by AI: How to cite ChatGPT

In-Text

In APA Style, you must describe when and how you used ChatGPT. In your text, provide the prompt you used, as well as any relevant text generated in response.

For example:

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

In-Text Citation (Quotation & Paraphrase)

(OpenAI, 2023)

References

In APA Style, the four elements of the reference list entry are:

  • Author. The company, "OpenAI," is considered the author (not "ChatGPT")
  • Date. Provide the year of the version you used, not the exact date (as per Section 10.10)
  • Title. The title is "ChatGPT." Include the version number you used after the title in parenthesis. Then, include bracketed text providing an additional description about the source; in this case, ChatGPT is a large language model.
  • Source. Since the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name. Only include the URL directly to ChatGPT.
