Most Common Types of SGBV

  • Sexual Violence
    • Sexual violence is any attempt or threat to force someone into undesired sexual activity without their consent, including exploitation, sexual harassment, intimidation, and more. 
  • Verbal Violence
    • Verbal violence is any act of verbal discrimination, including name-calling, teasing, threatening, undermining, criticizing, and more.
  • Physical Violence
    • Physical violence is any attempt or threat to cause physical harm to another person, including physical assault, battery, trafficking, destroying property, throwing objects, and more. 
  • Psychological and Emotional Violence 
    • Psychological and emotional violence are any acts that causes harm to a person's psychological and emotion well-being, including abuse, humiliation, insults, cruelty, degrading treatment, manipulation, and more.

 

Common Causes of SGBV

  • Gender inequality
  • Gender discrimination 
  • Harmful gender norms and stereotypes
  • Limited understanding of sexual and gender-based violence
  • Uncertainty or hesitation (of whether or not it is occurring)
