All applications to external research funding competitions must undergo administrative review and receive institutional approval prior to submission to the sponsor. The internal deadline is 5 business days in advance of the competition deadline unless otherwise indicated in the grant listings below or by the Division of Applied Research staff. See How to Submit an External Research Grant Application for further details.
Grants fall into two categories depending on the identity of the grant holder:
Institutional Grant: Red Deer Polytechnic is the grant holder. The primary applicant (person who creates, prepares, and completes the application and administers the grant on behalf of the institution) is determined by the funding sponsor. There are two categories:
Project funding: A project lead or project director (eligible faculty or staff) provides the intellectual direction of a specified project.
Capacity funding: Provided to Red Deer Polytechnic to establish and augment central resources supporting the institution’s applied research program(s).
Note: All grants within the federal College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program and from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) are institutional grants.
The integrated calendar lists the principal funding opportunities offered by NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, and CFI, including both agency-specific and jointly-administered programs.

College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program grants are institutional grants. You must contact the Division of Applied Research in order to apply. CCI grants fund applied research projects across the spectrum of natural sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and health. The program is administered by NSERC in collaboration with SSHRC and CIHR.
November 15, 2023: The College and Community Innovation (CCI) program partnership guidelines have been expanded to recognize hospitals and medical institutes as formal partners on a case-by-case basis. In general, the hospital or medical/clinical institute will need to confirm that their cash contributions are not from tri-Agency funding and that the CCI grant does not overlap with other tri-Agency funding (ex. CIHR grants). Prior to submitting an application with a hospital or medical/clinical institutes as a formal partner, approval by NSERC needs to be sought.
This change is effective now and will be reflected in the College and Community Innovation program partnership guidelines, in the spring of 2024.
For further guidance, please reach to RDP's Applied Research Office.

A guide to help researchers differentiate among the federal funding agencies when areas of research overlap.
Further to the guidelines for selecting the appropriate federal funding agency, this addendum outlines the eligibility of applications related to human health for NSERC funding for areas of research that overlap with CIHR.
Must be read by all applicants to CCI grants (e.g., CCSIF). The incorporation of EDI considerations within grant proposals is a new requirement that the Tri-agencies are now introducing to the college sector.
Although written as a guide to the EDI review criteria for the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) competitions, the information is generally applicable to EDI in grant applications.
This document is designed to assist the research communities served by NSERC with embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) considerations relevant to each or any stage of the research process: research questions, design of the study, methodology and data collection, analysis and interpretation, dissemination of results.
