Division of Applied Research - Internal Deadlines

All applications to external research funding competitions must undergo administrative review and receive institutional approval prior to submission to the sponsor. The internal deadline is 5 business days in advance of the competition deadline unless otherwise indicated in the grant listings below or by the Division of Applied Research staff. See How to Submit an External Research Grant Application for further details.

Individual vs Institutional Grants

Grants fall into two categories depending on the identity of the grant holder:

  1. Individual Grant: The Principal Investigator (PI) is the grant holder and primary applicant (person who creates, prepares, and completes the application and administers the grant on behalf of the institution). Red Deer Polytechnic receives and administers the funds on behalf of the grant holder.

  2. Institutional Grant: Red Deer Polytechnic is the grant holder. The primary applicant (person who creates, prepares, and completes the application and administers the grant on behalf of the institution) is determined by the funding sponsor. There are two categories:

    • Project funding: A project lead or project director (eligible faculty or staff) provides the intellectual direction of a specified project.

    • Capacity funding: Provided to Red Deer Polytechnic to establish and augment central resources supporting the institution’s applied research program(s).

Note: All grants within the federal College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program and from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) are institutional grants.

About
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), in collaboration with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), is pleased to launch  Lab to Market grants, a new tri-agency initiative designed to foster the development of entrepreneurship skills and commercialization capacity within networks across the academic community.

This initiative is designed to equip researchers and highly qualified personnel with essential tools, resources and knowledge to transform their academic research into innovations ready for market.

Up to $10 million per year Up to 5 years, renewable

Feb 12, 2024 - Letter of intent; if successful applicant will be invited for a full proposal by Sept 9, 2024

College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program grants are institutional grants. You must contact the Division of Applied Research  in order to apply. CCI grants fund applied research projects across the spectrum of natural sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and health. The program is administered by NSERC in collaboration with SSHRC and CIHR.

November 15, 2023: The College and Community Innovation (CCI) program partnership guidelines have been expanded to recognize hospitals and medical institutes as formal partners on a case-by-case basis. In general, the hospital or medical/clinical institute will need to confirm that their cash contributions are not from tri-Agency funding and that the CCI grant does not overlap with other tri-Agency funding (ex. CIHR grants). Prior to submitting an application with a hospital or medical/clinical institutes as a formal partner, approval by NSERC needs to be sought.

This change is effective now and will be reflected in the College and Community Innovation program partnership guidelines, in the spring of 2024.

For further guidance, please reach to RDP's Applied Research Office.
