Transforming Practices: Child Advocacy Conference - Call for Proposals

Red Deer Polytechnic and Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre | Transforming Practices: Child Abuse and Trauma | Red Deer, Alberta | May 30-31, 2023

Red Deer Polytechnic and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre are looking forward to showcasing our collective response to child abuse and trauma. The 2023 conference theme is “Transforming Practices: Child Abuse and Trauma.” This program will engage a wide range of speakers and topics as we explore ways to help professionals and community members better understand the issues surrounding child abuse and trauma. The objective of this conference is to increase awareness and contribute to learning how to positively impact the health of children and families.

As part of the program, we will host a Poster Session on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. We invite your proposal to display a poster as part of that session. Posters can be based on research or practice that are related to any of the following broad topic areas:

  • Indigenous Family RISK and Resilience
  • The impact of trauma on children of all ages
  • How trauma impacts the brain and children’s physiology
  • Current effective preventions and interventions
  • Legal and reporting issues
  • Fostering resilience
  • Improving mental health outcomes for children and families
  • New methods for engaging, collecting, and analyzing data
  • Leveraging research for innovative prevention and intervention
  • A trauma informed approach for children experiencing maltreatment
  • Implementation of trauma focused therapy
  • Improving the detection of child maltreatment
  • What have been learned from Integrated Response
  • Child sexual abuse
  • Established shared research
  • Compelling case studies
  • Building a business model for funding
  • Working groups
  • Impact of domestic violence
  • What makes an event traumatic
  • Importance of child and family assessments
  • Psychological first aid
  • Creating belonging for children who experience abuse
  • Impact of historical trauma
  • Transforming trauma approaches
  • Finding justice for victims of child abuse

Submission Requirements
Proposals should include the following:

  • Title of the poster
  • Short abstract (up to 300 words) of the poster and project, including its purpose and how it may relate to any of the conference topics above.
  • Abstracts should be submitted by email to maureen.toews@rdpolytech.ca
  • The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2023, and submitters will be notified by April 30, 2023.

Registration

To learn more about this conference, and to register, visit Eventbrite.ca. The conference fee is $100 plus tax. Eligible RDP faculty and staff may apply for PD funding to attend through the appropriate processes associated with FARDP, AUPE and CUPE. Students that register to attend can apply the promo code: STUDENT2023 to their order and this will discount the conference fee to $50 plus tax. On the day of the conference, students will be asked to show their RDP Student ID Card at the registration desk when they check in. All poster presenters must register and pay for the conference.
